Chris Bayley, the Exhibitions Curator at Serpentine, leads an engaging walkthrough of emajendat, the first UK solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Lauren Halsey. Halsey's work is rooted in the history and culture of South Central Los Angeles, where she merges historical and contemporary elements through her unique visual language. emajendat transforms the Serpentine South Gallery into an immersive "Funk garden" that connects Kensington Gardens with the gallery space. The installation includes a life-size version of Halsey’s signature vignettes, featuring a prismatic floor and walls made of CDs, large figurines, sand dunes, and a live water fountain. It also presents her first moving image work, displayed alongside bespoke wallpaper that extends her visual storytelling. Halsey’s work draws inspiration from various sources, including Funk music, iconography of the African diaspora, and architecture, all interwoven to create a powerful, multi-sensory experience. This talk offers attendees the chance to engage deeply with her creative vision and the socio-political narratives she explores.
