The Magic of… Izakaya

Magma’s take:

A foodie members club incubates a Michelin-starred Izakaya feast.

On July 21st, Angelo Sato and the team at Humble Chicken present “The Magic of… Izakaya”, a celebration of the quintessential Japanese eating and drinking den. An Izakaya is a typical Japanese bar, serving a variety of small dishes and snacks, washed down with drinks such as saké and beer.

The 11 course tasting menu, will feature classic dishes and flavours one might expect at an Izakaya, but with the European influences and world class cooking Sato and his team are now known for. No Izakaya experience is complete without a strong helping of saké, and guests on the day can expect an epic selection of saké sips. There might be a friendly drinking competition to help wash it down…

Humble Chicken received its first Michelin star in 2024, which comes as no surprise, given Angelo Sato’s incredible pedigree. Stints at two-star Narisawa and three-star Ryugin in Tokyo, three-star Eleven Madison Park in New York, one-star Trinity, three-star Restaurant Gordon Ramsay and two-star Restaurant Story in London, before finally opening Humble Chicken in 2021.

The original format of Humble Chicken took inspiration from the traditions of Toyko’s izakayas, serving a predominantly yakitori menu, which included essentially every part of the chicken, from the achilles to the cartilage. In 2023, Angelo converted Humble Chicken from its yakitori focused menu, to a Japanese tasting menu with European flavours, a celebration of Angelo’s roots and career so far.

For one day only this summer, Angelo and his team are going back to their Humble Chicken roots as they celebrate the iconic Japanese institution, the Izakaya.
